The new buzz word, (senza flare) for the past few years seems to be Perimenopause. While there are an array of uncomfortable symptoms that can creep up on us throughout this stage of life, the universe is nudging us as if to say, "ok girl, it's time to be seriously proactive about nourishing your mind-body-spirit because if you don't a serious shit storm is headed your way"... ok maybe not those exact words but it is an opportunity to reflect on our nutrition, mindfulness and with the child rearing years (somewhat) fulfilled we have more time to wholeheartedly dedicate to optimal health which encompasses not only our nutrition plan, but also our mental and spiritual health. The function of mind-body-spirit always have been and always will be intertwined.
One nutritional powerhouse that I am reaping the benefits from is our Golden beauty Turmeric. My goodness, a 3000 page book can be dedicated to the amazing benefits of this multifaceted spice. In fact, there have been over 20,000 studies conducted on the amazing benefits of curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, which gives the spice its vibrant yellow color, derived from the Curcuma longa plant. It's responsible for long list of turmeric's health benefits but for the sake of this post, I will focus specifically on how it supports us throughout perimenopause and beyond and treats symptoms with ease.
Weight loss and Dirty Estrogen Metabolites
Lets talk about weight fluctuations and metabolizing the 'dirty' estrogens that get stored in our cells making it even more challenging to loose weight. Turmeric, enriched with curcumin, aids metabolism by supporting the liver's detoxification pathways. Specifically, it assists in the breakdown of "dirty estrogens," which are metabolites of estrogen that, when not properly processed, can lead to hormonal imbalances. Curcumin enhances the activity of enzymes responsible for conjugating estrogens, facilitating their elimination via urine, feces, bile and menstruation.
Curcumin also supports weight loss by reducing insulin resistance, regulating fat metabolism, and curbing inflammation—factors that often stall weight loss as we age. It also helps balance blood sugar, which means fewer cravings and more energy to stay active.
And here’s a bonus: curcumin activates brown fat (the kind that burns calories) and reduces the growth of white fat, which is linked to belly fat accumulation. Talk about an all-in-one fat fighter!
Anti-Inflammation: Relief for Aches and Pains
Curcumin is a polyphenol, a type of organic compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin targets multiple pathways involved in inflammation, inhibiting the production of inflammatory molecules like cytokines and enzymes responsible for joint discomfort making it helpful for managing arthritis symptoms and overall musculoskeletal pain. A powerful anti-inflammatory, studies show that curcumin rivals some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, without the harmful side effects like dependency and gut microflora deficiencies. How refreshing it is to have a supplement so readily available and abundant on this earth that is a natural multifaceted healer! Amen to Turmeric!!
Insulin Sensitivity & Blood Sugar Control
Blood sugar regulation becomes increasingly important in midlife, and turmeric is a powerful tool for improving insulin sensitivity. Research supports that turmeric has been found to lower fasting blood glucose, which is key in managing metabolic health.
A study in the American Diabetes Association Journal found that curcumin supplementation improved β-cell function (those are the cells that produce insulin) and lowered blood sugar levels in prediabetic individuals. In other words, turmeric keeps your metabolism running smoothly—and helps prevent Type 2 diabetes. By modulating inflammatory pathways, turmeric gives your body the tools to fight insulin resistance effectively. A win-win for energy and metabolic health!
Turmeric for Eye Health: Protect Those Peepers
Reading glasses anyone?! Typically after 40 we can no longer pass off our eye straining to poor lighting and early morning/late night tiredness! But we can definitely shorten the gap of dependency on glasses for vision support 247!
Curcumin’s antioxidant properties help reduce oxidative stress, a major culprit behind eye issues like cataracts and glaucoma. Research suggests that curcumin might even help protect against macular degeneration by keeping the blood vessels around the eyes healthy. If you want to preserve your vision long-term, consider incorporating turmeric into your wellness routine.
Mood Disorders to Feel Good Chemicals
Feeling a little snappy lately? Or perhaps you just seem to feel low vibrational energies with no apparent reason? This is completely normal as hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can sometimes bring on the uninvited emotions of anxiety or depression. But studies have found that curcumin may increase serotonin and dopamine levels—the feel-good chemicals in your brain. One study even suggests curcumin can perform as well as Prozac in reducing depression symptoms once again without the harmful side effects. Whether you’re struggling with low mood, anxiety, or full out rage against the machine lol turmeric can offer some much-needed emotional support instilling your mind with an even keeled breeze of positive emotions.
Hair Growth & Radiant Skin: Glow from the Inside Out
Finally a notable mention for us ladies to benefit from this Golden girl, is shinny thick hair and radiant skin. Unfortunately, hair thinning and dull skin can sometimes creep up out of nowhere during this time but rest assured because curcumin works wonders for our hair and skin, too! By boosting circulation and reducing inflammation, turmeric promotes healthier hair follicles, encouraging growth and minimizing thinning (hello, luscious locks!). And when it comes to skin? Turmeric’s antioxidant properties help combat free radical damage, which can leave skin looking dull and aged. Many people swear by turmeric-infused skincare for its ability to reduce redness, even out skin tone, and restore that youthful glow. But keep in mind that what we put in our body is just as effective if not more, than what we put on for glowing, radiant skin :)
How to Use Turmeric Like a Pro
Cooking with turmeric is an easy way to enjoy its benefits—use it in marinades, sprinkle it in curries, soups, or mix it in teas. But if you’re aiming for therapeutic effects, supplements may be more potent (just make sure they contain black pepper and include a healthy fat like coconut oil or avocado for absorption). Dosages around 500-1000 mg a day are typical for general use, but always check with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement. As with anything, consistency is key—whether you’re sipping golden milk or popping a curcumin supplement, stick with it to see results over time.
